That was a great deep dive into the numbers Marie. Although I don't know for sure if what you found means your last statement is correct. It would be fun to discuss that point. ie: do we need to add that point in our list of criteria for what is contemporary art? I am not sure, myself. Maybe because it seems that point is not really about the art?

Thanks, Michele. Good question and a good point for discussion. Are the criteria for this award (or contemporary art, for that matter) based on the artist or the art? And, can the two be separated? Identity art - whether related to race or gender or any other defined quality of the artist as a person - is especially tricky as we expect the artist to be an authentic representative of that particular identity. Other types of art, abstract painting or political works about the environment or art institutions, for example, are not attached to the artist as a person in the same way. I expect to come back to the issue of identity and how contemporary art is defined as I work through my data analysis in coming posts.
