The winner of the Turner Prize was announced on December 9, 2025 and the work of the four shortlisted artists, Mohammed Sami, Zadie Xa, Rene Matić, and Nnena Kalu, is showing at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery in Bradford, U.K. until February 22. Annual prizes like the Turner and the Sobey Art Award provide windows into what up-and-coming artists are producing and what the art world chooses to validate as art at a given time. A review of these four artists and the jury’s choice of winner, Nnene Kalu, provide a stimulating point of departure for continuing our conversation about what “makes” contemporary art.
