The Conversation Continues...
Making & Meaning Conversation Begins Again on September 11
After taking a break for the summer months, Making & Meaning Conversation is ready to restart on September 11.
Making & Meaning Conversation is an online forum where participants discuss a variety of topics about contemporary art. The topics are suggested by the participants and my role is to source information (such as websites, articles, videos), publish a post prior to our meetings, and then facilitate the conversation.
Making & Meaning Conversation meets twice per month for one hour on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 10 am Pacific Time. The fee for participation is $80.00 CAD (or equivalent in your local currency) for one year. This subscription allows access to the topic material, the opportunity to share comments and information on Making & Meaning Chat, and, of course, the opportunity to take part in a lively, live conversation with a group of very welcoming and engaged participants.
Here is what some of those participants have said about their experience with Making & Meaning Conversation:
Being in the Making & Meaning Conversation has been an invaluable experience. I was part of an early group that met & supported each other locally. Marie has now taken it to another dimension. At first it was a program at a public gallery & then it transitioned online during the pandemic. Now it is offered on Substack where she posts her articles on contemporary art. Her research & continuity lend knowledge & insight to an art world that is hard to pin down because of its breadth & expansiveness.
As a practicing professional artist living at a distance from major art centres, I yearn for peer contact. This is a group of artists, art professionals, collectors & aficionados who want to interact about contemporary art in a meaningful way. I find it to be a practical path to continue the rigour of a Master’s program & integrate it seamlessly into my art practice.
Thank you Marie & participants. I appreciate how you have opened up to share your opinions & perspectives. This has been a safe space to nourish & educate my artists’ soul! - Sara Robichaud
Making & Meaning is an intellectually stimulating forum for the discussion of contemporary art. I value the unique insights offered by participants and appreciate the diversity of perspectives represented. Marie does an excellent job of preparing the group with source material prior to our discussions. She is also skilled at lightly managing each meeting and ensuring every voice is heard. Thank you, Marie, for providing a space where the beauty and complexity of art are challenged and celebrated. - Denise T, artist
Participating in Making & Meaning has been an incredibly rewarding experience. With every new topic broached and discussion that follows, I have felt my arts and culture education – once quite confined to the walls of the academic institutions I attended – continue to grow, flourishing as I have the opportunity to engage in challenging, thought-provoking conversations with my fellow group members. Becoming part of this group has felt like being welcomed into a strong, supportive arts community. - Jaime-Brett Sine
If you are interested in joining Making & Meaning Conversation or have any questions about this program, please contact me by replying to this email or by emailing me at makingandmeaning@substack.com. If you are a returning participant, please send me a note to indicate that you will be continuing and then renew your subscription to Making & Meaning when it comes due (your renewal date will be one year from when you first subscribed to Making & Meaning). If you have the basic subscription to Making & Meaning ($60.00) and want to upgrade to the live conversation group, please contact me. Prior to our September 11 meeting, I will send a meeting link to all registered participants.
If the thought of joining a live video conversation does not appeal to you, you are welcome to sign up for the regular subscription ($60 CAD per year). This subscription will give you access to the topic material and allow you, if you choose, to share your thoughts on Making & Meaning Chat.
As for a topic, our first meeting will be dedicated to introductions, updates from members on art activities over the summer, and a discussion on topics for our new season of Making & Meaning Conversation.
Looking forward to seeing everyone and continuing our conversation about the making and meaning of contemporary art!
