Contemporary art, the kind of art that is shown in the most important galleries and museums in the world, is the consummate “conversation piece.” It can be politically charged, intellectually stimulating, and delightfully entertaining but equally frustrating and infuriating! What is it, why do we value it, and who are these artists who produce it? These are the kinds of questions we address in Making & Meaning Conversation, a bi-monthly live, online forum for discussing contemporary art.
Making & Meaning Conversation will be resuming after a summer break on September 10. Making & Meaning Conversation meets on-line (using Microsoft Teams) for one hour, every second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 10 am Pacific Time (1 pm ET and 6 pm GMT). At each session we discuss a topic chosen by the participants. The Friday prior to our meeting, I post material for the topic and suggest points of conversation. During the session, everyone has an opportunity to share their thoughts on the topic. There are no grades or exams and no art experience is necessary, only a desire to explore different issues about contemporary art. See, for example, the topic sample in my May 30th post below.
The fee to join Making & Meaning Conversation is $80.00 (Founder’s subscription) for the year. To provide the most conducive environment for a conversation, enrollment is limited to 15 participants. If you are interested in joining this friendly conversation, please contact me at makingandmeaning@substack.com or reply to this email.
If you are too shy or unable to join us live on-line, you might consider a basic subscription to Making & Meaning ($60.00 per year) which will give you access to the topic material and the opportunity to share your thoughts on Making & Meaning Chat.
I am looking forward to welcoming you on September 10 and continuing our conversation on the making and meaning of contemporary art!
